TENNIS PROGRAM EVENTS

A Word from the Tennis Co-Chairmen
Casey Tarr & Madeline Metcalfe

SCWDC offers a variety of trips betweeen April and October. The first one this year is the April trip to the Hilton Head Island, one of the tennis resorts, Then, over consecutive weekends in May, two instructional trips go to Wintergreen Resort in Charlottesville, VA. The final trip of the year is over October Columbus Day weekend, to the Pine Island Racquet Club near Corolla/Duck NC. Of these, the most instruction is offered on the trips to the Wintergreen Resort with nine-ten hours of group drills and lessons. All of the trips are geared towards those who already play tennis at the intermediate level. Trip size varies between 16-30.

Another opportunity is playing in the Sunday Instructional Tennis Program, which is a weekend event, every other week, at Fairfax Racquet Club. See the description below.

Consider these in your vacation plans, ask questions, join the trip that suits your budget and fitness level.

Sign up by mailing a Tennis Weekend Reservation Form to the leader named in the event. Make your check out to the "SCWDC". You will receive a comfirmation of your check and reservation by email or phone within two weeks of receipt of your letter, including information about when your final payment is due. If the event is full, you will be wait-listed, and your check will not be cashed until there is space on the trip for you. Be sure to send the reservation form, or equivalent information. You are not "on the trip" until the leader confirms you.

On weekend trips, we must match participants to individual bedrooms and beds (couples, 2 singles, etc.), and we cancel rooms 20-40 days before the event if sign-ups fall short of room reservations. However, it is important that you only signup for events that you are willing and able to attend, because there may be unrecoverable expenses which you must pay if you cannot attend the event that you signed up for.

The SCWDC does not offer traditional "learn-to-play-tennis" lessons in the summer. For those, you need to contact a county recreation program or local tennis club, including those at which we play our Saturday Night tennis parties. Check the Fairfax Racquet Club web site at www.fairfaxracquetclub.com which has information on day and evening lessons. Also, your local county recreation department:
in Fairfax, that is, http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/living/parks/default.htm;
in Arlington, that is, http://www.co.arlington.va.us/prcr/scripts/classes/classes.asp;
in Montgomery County, MD, it is http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/siteHead.asp?page=/mc/services/rec/home.html. (Of course, if these addresses don't work, try a web search using an internet search engine.) Or try a summer weekend teaching course like Ray Campbell Tennis Camps at 301-209-9464 for sessions in June and July. You might also check the Friday Weekend Section of the Washington Post, or the Yellow Pages/Yellow Book telephone listing under Tennis Instruction. The SCWDC is not associated with and does not endorse any training program or individual.

Dates: Alternating Sundays, September 14, 2008 - May 3, 2009
Cost: $290.00 per person; $1,160 per team

Deadline: August 3, 2008, 6 p.m. is the deadline for receipt of applications with full payment, and for all applicants to belong to the SCWDC as members for 2008-2009 year. Repeat, SCWDC membership is required. Applications and memberships received after the deadline will be considered in the order they are received, as space permits. As of mid-August, the program's tennis slots are mostly filled. If you want to become a substitute player, read this material: How to become a Sunday Tennis Sub

Sunday Instructional Program is a mixture of professional instruction and fun play for 16 Sundays through the fall, winter and spring at the Fairfax Racquet Club. Participants play with the same group on alternating Sundays. Each session is two hours, which includes 40 minutes of instruction from a tennis professional provided by Fairfax Racquet Club. Also included are a holiday party in December and an indoor picnic in May.

We encourage participants to form their own foursomes and to designate one person to serve as court captain to submit the application and a check or checks for $1,160. We will attempt to place anyone who is not part of a foursome. We will also maintain and distribute a sub list.

Time slots are in the afternoon and evening as follows: 1-3 p.m.; 3-5 p.m.; 5-7 p.m.; 7-9 p.m.; 2:30-4:30 p.m.; 4:30-6:30 p.m.; 6:30-8:30 p.m.

We give priority for court times to groups having members with volunteer service to SCWDC, in any program. Please send names, phone numbers and addresses of the players in your group with check(s) totaling the final payment amount to Teresa Bigler. (Please check the July/August magazine or call Teresa for the final payment amount.) Also include your first, second and third choice of time-slots, and a statement of service to SCWDC. Applications and checks must be received not later than 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 3rd. The SCWDC office must also have a record of each person's membership for the 2008-2009 season by 6 p.m. on August 3. This means that you must mail your new or renewal membership application early enough so that it is received in the SCWDC office by Friday, August 1.

If you would like to join immediately, please click this link SCWDC Membership Signup which takes you to a new page.

Please captains, make sure that your group players are ACTUALLY MEMBERS - ASK EVERYONE, DID THEY RENEW THEIR MEMBERSHIP OR SEND IN A NEW APPLICATION? Every year, some group does not qualify for play or loses their place in line to get a certain time slot because of someone's failure to renew his/her membership by the deadline. With the on-line renewal feature, you can remedy this by asking your members!

Questions: Call Teresa Bigler at 703-455-8434. Mail Sunday Tennis applications and checks payable to SCWDC to Teresa Bigler, 9528 Cherry Oak Court, Burke, VA 22015. Send membership applications and checks to SCWDC, 5309 Lee Highway, Arlington, VA 22207-1666.
