It is titled, the "Marvin Stephens Memorial Tournament." Please read on.
The SCWDC was created in 1936 and has operated successfully and with a ton of fun for all that time, in many differnet ways, including skiing, boarding, roller blading, hiking, biking, volleyball, sailing, dancing, golf, bowling, recreation trips, parties. We celebrated our 75th year in 2011. We grew to 7,000 members during the height of the skiing and are now about 1,700 members in 2012.
The tennis program in its present form was started in 1975. The club used to hold tennis tournaments, both mixed doubles and singles, and we are bringing that back for this party. In one night, we will hold a mixed doubles tournament. Please look at the downloadable flyer for how it will be run.
It honors the contributions and memory of Marvin Stephens, a member since 1950, who died unexpectedly in 2010. He volunteered so often during his membership, he broke the scale for measuring volunteer service. (This was reported by the SCWDC historian.)
If you want to participate in the tournament, you must sign up in advance. Early signups are appreciated. If there are empty courts, free play will be possible.
Everyone will be able to enjoy really good food and drink, socialize with other tennis friends, and have a grand 'ol time. A special feature of this night will be an award presented to long-time member John Reynolds, who was a major contributor to the SCWDC Tennis Program's trip to Tops'l Beach and Tennis resort. John moved to Tops'l as a permanent resident.
If you have any questions, call the leader, Madeline Metcalfe, 703-425-4842, or email mzkbox@aol.com.
