TENNIS PROGRAM

A Word from the Tennis Co-Chairs
Casey Tarr & Madeline Metcalfe

We offer three summer/fall activities: (1) social tennis on Tuesday evenings beginning in May at Wakefield Park in Annandale, VA, 50 yards from the intersection of I-495 and Braddock Road to a right turn into the park entrance, and (2) social tennis on Wednesday Night beginning in June at Hains Point (East Potomac Park) in DC (3) Sunday afternoon tennis at Wakefield Park. For the first two events, you just come with your racquet and balls, and we arrange matches with other participants. For the third event, a coordinator is not always present, you may need to arrange your own matches (see the article below). We post information about all of these events in April of every year, leaders name, phone numbers, and directions.

The SCWDC is continuing the Tuesday Night Tennis at Wakefield Park. Sign up for one hour and, if space is available, you can sign up for the second hour at no additional cost. Those who arrive early will receive priority in playing the second hour, space available. Sunday Afternoon Tennis at Wakefield Park, Annandale , VA

Date: August 24 through October 26.

Location: Wakefield Recreation Park, Annandale, VA (see directions below)
Leader: Charlie Williams

Time: Play times are 1-4 p.m. Cost: $Free

Location: Wakefield Park, 8100 Braddock Road, Annandale, VA

Directions: Take the Beltway to Braddock Road West, Rec Center is first turn on the right, turn right into the park entrance and follow it to the large parking lot and Rec Center. Tennis courts are to the right just past the recycling bins.

The SCWDC is experimenting with Sunday afternoon tennis play at Wakefield Park for the next 3 months. Wakefield has 11 tennis courts and 6 back-board stations. The courts are rarely full at this time of year. So the deal, is you and other players come out, see who else is there, and put together a singles or doubles match. We will not reserve courts in advance, although anyone who wants to, can do so, and then form a group. How will you find other players? Start by going to the first bench along the walk-way between the courts. See if a SCWDC member has left a note about which court the SCWDC members are playing on. This is a self rated social doubles format open to all levels of players starting with advanced beginner, able to serve and return serve.

Charlie, if he is there, will likely wear a light blue visor. Because this is open play, you should have some willingess to play with less rated players than you, or sometimes better rated players, and changing partners to even up sides when an much better team is playing a much less skilled team. In other words, this is Social Tennis which can be competitive depending on the match-ups.

Court Reservation information for those who want to be sure of having their own court: 703-321-7081. Doubles for 1 1/2 hours is & per hour.

Inclement weather. Call the park and ask about court conditions. Another option, go to Trafficland.com which has a camera close to Braddock Road and the Beltway. For more information, contact Charlie Williams at 703-750-3359. No calls after 9pm. Email= Charlie Williams .

Wednesday Night Tennis at Hains Point (Potomac Park)
Wednesdays, mid-June through August 20

6-8PM through September 3; 5:30-7:30 in September. Arrive 15 minutes before start time.
Cost: $6 members, $9 non-members (please bring change)

Ski Club Wednesday Night Tennis (WNT) will start on June 18, 2008. Players meet at Hains Point court between the parking lot and the courts, on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 pm to play tennis and socialize afterwards. Tennis players are pretty friendly - on court and off court. Our SCWDC players are always looking forward to meeting new players, and welcoming them into the SCWDC tennis player group. From this experience, you may decide to come to a SCWDC tennis party or join a weekend eventlike a Wintergreen Instructional Trip.

The tennis courts are in beautiful Potomac Park at Hains Point, 1090 Ohio Drive, SW, Washington, DC. Usually, social mixed doubles are played on hard courts for all skill levels, matched by ability. Of course, bring your own racket and tennis balls. Play is for one hour of social doubles starting at 6 or 7PM. Arrive 15 minutes before to sign up.

About the end date of August: due to occasional rain-outs, the "last playing date" is often in September. The leader will make announcements during August about this.

If you have any questions concerning this event, please contact John Donnelly at 703-685-8649 or JNDON@msn.com

DIRECTIONS: FOLLOW ROAD SIGNS FOR "WEST POTOMAC PARK/PARK POLICE". Address is 1090 Ohio Drive, SW, Wash DC. In general terms, this area is east of the Jefferson Memorial. If you have never driven to Hains Pt, it's best to take a test drive during a weekend, not rush hour.

FROM VIRGINIA
Use I-395 North or George Washington Parkway to get to and cross the 14th Street Bridge going north, which becomes the Southeast Freeway as you go into Washington. Between 5-7pm at night, there is lot of traffic between the Shirlington/Pentagon and the 14th St Bridge, so allow for extra travel time if you want to arrive 15 minutes before the session start time.
Cross over bridge in one of the two right-hand lanes, eventually getting into the far most right lane as you complete the bridge crossing. Take the "West Potomac Park" exit*. Pass the "National Capital Park Authority" building/parking lot on your right, and you immediately come to a T intersection, this is "Buckeye Drive Southwest." Turn left, and in 50 yards you will come to Potomac Tennis Cener parking lot. If it is full, drive back to the "National Capital Park Authority" parking lot and walk back to the Tennis Center.
*If you accidentally pass the West Potomac Park exit, take the 12th St exit, but now you must reverse direction and navigate through downtown on 14th or 15th St towards Jefferson Memorial and then a left turn onto Ohio Drive.

FROM DC VIA 14th St
Follow 14th Street to Ohio Drive, turn left, and continue on Ohio Drive to the first or second Potomac Tennis Center parking lots.

FROM DC VIA LINCOLN MEMORIAL
Follow Ohio Drive through Potomac Park past Jefferson Memorial, cross under I-395 overpass and come up to the Tennis Center's "Ohio Drive" parking lot (first lot). If full, continue down Ohio Drive to intersection with Buckeye Drive, turn right, and try the second larger parking lot. If full, drive back onto Buckeye Drive, go to next intersection, turn right and then turn left into the "National Capital Park Authority" building's parking lot. DO NOT FAIL TO TURN IN THIS PARKNG LOT OR YOU WILL DRIVE BACK ON TO I-395 North/SOUTHEAST FREEWAY.
